6060 is a Mountain-type (4-8-2) U-1-c steam locomotive built for the Canadian National Railway in 1944, mostly by women due to the Second World War happening during the time. It was retired in 1959 and rescued by CNR engineer Harry Home. It now belongs to the Rocky Mountain Rail Society which was started by Harry Home, because of the 6060. Harry Home has worked with the 6060 ever since until his passing in 2020. 6060 has gone from being on display in Jasper, running excursions in Ontario, living at the Alberta Railway Museum, and being worked on at the Cominco plant at the end of the J Lead/McLeod Industrial Branch. It's run with other steam locomotives and was presented to the people of Alberta for Alberta's 75th anniversary. It's earned some nicknames over time - "Bullet Nose Betty" being a famous one, and of course, it's also known as "The Spirit of Alberta". Clearly, it's steeped in history. Any locomotive this historic needs to keep adding to its country's and its own history - it should be running out on the rails. But it's not. Currently it's under refurbishment - and as a member of the Rocky Mountain Rail Society, I need to tell you that we need support to restore 6060 so it can run excursions on the Alberta Prairie again (and other places in Canada)!
Currently we're working on fixing the stay bolts which hold the boiler of the locomotive down and keep everything strong and rigid. And they're not cheap. So please, donate to the RMRS at the link below. It would make me happy to see 6060 full of steam and to hear her whistle blow in person.
