About The Website
I'm Alec, a Calgary railroad fanatic in high school with a passion for documenting Calgary's rail history.
I think trains are more than the irritating nuisance blocking your drive to work. Trains and railroads are a vital part of society, full of rich history and a promising future. Believe it or not, most of our cities were built around trains. I hope that as you explore my website, you will begin to appreciate my interest a bit more - there's a lot you will learn! More About The Site
This website is a place for me to share my knowledge and research with the world and it's been created 100% by me.
It doubles as a sort of portfolio for myself where you can find much of my work and other projects. Learn more here. You can find all my research sources for this website here. Featured PageThe J Lead
Learn about one of Calgary's most historic industrial spurs. Ever wondered about that mysterious abandoned track that crosses Blackfoot Trail? Constructed in 1940, it was a vital part of Calgary's rail scene, with a junction with CN, an extremely steep hill, and a forgotten "Railway Street", the J Lead may just have been Calgary's coolest railway track. And half of it still exists! Click here to visit the page on the J Lead |

Learn A New Thing
Did you know:
In the past, most large businesses had a railway track right to their facility. These type of tracks were usually the most unique ones in a city, snaking around buildings, running down back alleys with tracks embedded in pavement, and through mysterious, gritty industrial parks. But very few of them are still used. These tracks are something I find particularly interesting, and I'm documenting each one that was once in Calgary (there were more than 20 at a time, all over the city). If this interests you, you can learn about each and every one that connected much of Calgary on both CP and CN rails. |
